Power Surge: NPUC Meets on WWU Campus
Leadership convention brings 1,000
By: Becky St. ClairNearly 1,000 visitors converged on the Walla Walla University campus last week for the 2011 North Pacific Union Conference Leadership Convention and Constituency Session, and the WWU Constituency Session. The event, which takes place every five years, began Sept. 7 and concluded with the constituency meetings on Sunday, Sept. 11.
The event required a year of planning, which was carried out by Pam McVay. The work was done with the help of volunteers from the community as well as students, faculty, and staff, who volunteered their time to sweep floors, set up chairs, switch out table cloths, set out cookies, lead out in children’s activities, and staff the information booth, among many other things.
“There was not a department on the WWU campus that did not have a number of people involved in making this event a success,” says McVay. “It was unbelievable the number of people who came out to help; some hadn’t even signed up ahead of time, they just heard we needed extra hands, and they jumped right in to help.”
Carlton Byrd, speaker and director of “Breath of Life,” presented the opening night keynote address, and several other presenters, including WWU President John McVay, filled the following days with meaningful lectures and discussions. Bob Cushman, chair of the biology department, served on a discussion panel on the topic of origins, and several WWU faculty members were honored for their role in putting together the Andrews Study Bible, published in 2010.
“WWU really rolled out the welcome mat for the pastors and leaders and their families,” says Steve Vistaunet, assistant to the president for communications at the NPUC. “Everything about this whole event is just fabulous.”
